Dr Shakeel Afridi: Newsweek’s Dubious Hero

American magazine Newsweek in a resent issue (June 22, 2012) has attempted to laud efforts of Dr Afridi’s efforts to run a fake vaccination program in Pakistani city of Abbotabad. ‘The Doctor’s far-ranging contacts in tribal areas made him ideal for gathering intelligence on the foreign Jihadis and native extremists who infest Pakistan’s borderland’ wrote the American weekly in a cover story ‘Hero or Heretic?’. Declaring Afridi a Hero either way, the weekly forgot to mention that Mr Afridi had not only flouted the laws of the country at the behest of foreigners and in the process has also robbed the public trust off Pakistan’s health facility. Do we have any moral grounds to support a person who has been playing with the health of innocent citizens?

The publication is fast developing a reputation where only Heretics can become hero of Newsweek probably a foreign magazine can never understand local traditions. Well that far it is okay but more alarming is if it was a deliberate effort? Means setting a foreign agenda where only heretics are welcome! After all in a country where foreign office officials are unable to take time for national duty, media is to set a foreign agenda, and Newsweek is no exception.
